CELEBRATE moratorium on executions in Washington
Friends,
Today we CELEBRATE Governor Inslee’s announcement “to impose a moratorium on executions while I’m Governor of the state of Washington.” He added, “If a death penalty case comes to my desk for action, I will issue a reprieve,” not a commutation or pardon.
We urge you to
- Send a message to Governor Inslee telling him, “Thank you for halting executions in Washington.” No need to be any fancier. Use his website https://fortress.wa.gov/es/governor/ , or call him at 1-360-902-4111, or on the Legislative Hotline at 1-800-562-6000.
- In addition, please vote YES in the poll at the Seattle Times supporting Inslee’s action. http://seattletimes.com/html/localnews/2022883256_deathpenaltyinsleexml.html
We rarely forward messages from other organizations, however, this well written announcement from the Washington Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty says it all:At 10:30 am this morning, in a televised news conference in Olympia, Governor Jay Inslee announced a moratorium on executions during his tenure in office and stated his opposition to the death penalty. You can read the Governor’s statement here or watch the archive of his press conference on TVW.This is VERY exciting news! The Governor said he is using his Executive power so that the conversation about the policy of the death penalty can continue, without the looming threat of an execution.Celebrating something of this magnitude is rare…let’s do it.
In the Light,
The Friends Committee on Washington Public Policy
