Law Enforcement Training and Community Safety Act

Quaker Voice on Washington Public Policy has endorsed the Initiative to the Legislature, I-940, the Law Enforcement Training and Community Safety Act, sponsored by De-Escalate Washington.  This measure would:

(1) require law enforcement officers to obtain violence de-escalation and mental health training, so that officers will have greater skills to resolve conflicts without the use of physical or deadly force

(2) adopt a “good faith” standard instead of proof of malice for officer criminal liability in those exceptional circumstances where deadly force is used.

We encourage you to go to De-Escalate WA  (http://www.deescalatewa.org/) for more information about the initiative and opportunities for signature gathering and other actions, as well as donations to the effort.  Provided sufficient signatures are gathered, the initiative would be on the ballot in 2018 (not 2017), if not passed first by the legislature.*
